The number one rule in natural skin care is, never use anything on your skin that you can’t put into your mouth. Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and it needs to be fed and nourished just like the rest of our body. Using the principles of Ayurvedic skin care we can safely and naturally keep our skin radiant. Daily skin care rituals include abhyanga massage, a full body self massage with herbal infused oils. The massage is done prior to bathing, using oils like coconut in the warmer months because it’s consistency is lighter, and sesame in the colder months because the denseness protects skin from wind and cold. It may seem odd using cooking oil on your skin, but when it comes to skincare products, simple is best.
You’ll start the massage at your feet and work your way up to your face body part by body part. Leave the oil on for a minimum of 20 mins then cleanse using exfoliating gloves with an oil based soap like Dr. Bronner’s. Your skin will tingle with cleanliness, smell wonderful, and retain moisture. In the winter months when we are going from dry heat inside, to freezing cold outside, re-apply the oil after your shower and mix it with rosewater to minimize greasiness.
